Legislation: A Guide To Your Waste

8. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

The WEEE Directive which came into force on 1st July 2007 places a legal duty on businesses to ensure that their redundant IT and electrical equipment is recycled. The Directive has essentially been derived to ensure millions of tonnes of waste electronic equipment produced every year is not landfilled. By placing the legal obligation on the waste producer to ensure the redundant electronic waste is re-used or recycled wherever possible, the WEEE Directive is designed to force both producers and consumers to examine the amount of waste they produce and embrace waste minimistation and recycling initiatives. Under this broad legislation, items as diverse as mainframe computers, toasters, mobile phones and fax machines have to be separated from normal waste for recycling or re-use.

The WEEE Directive means that you can no longer dispose of your old IT equipment alongside your general waste. However, PHS Datashred offer a WEEE secure recycling service for redundant electrical and IT equipment ensuring compliance with relevant legislation is met and backed up by a full ISO 9001 certificated audit trial.
